Earlier today, Anthony D’Alessandro at Deadline exclusively revealed that the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles film franchise will be getting a CGI reboot.

Paramount announced back in 2018 that the Ninja Turtle movies would be getting a fresh start with Andrew Dodge writing the first script. This afternoon’s announcement, however, is the first news we’ve heard since then. This will also be the first animated Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie the 2007 CGI-animated TMNT (which was distributed by Warner Bros).

No casting or plot details were disclosed, but we did get plenty of info about who will be working behind the scenes to bring the heroes in a half shell back to the big screen.

According to D’Alessandro, Brendan O’Brien (Neighbors: Sorority Rising) appears to have taken over the scripting duties from Dodge and Gravity Falls writer Jeff Rowe will direct. The film will be produced by Seth Rogan’s Point Grey Pictures with Paramount handling the distribution.

Whatever your feelings about the Ninja Turtles’ film franchise switching to animation, I think we can all agree that this is one of the very rare instances where a quick-turn-reboot is welcome. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of of the Shadows may have been better than its predecessor, but neither movie is very good. Let’s hope this new creative team can capture spirit and storytelling that have made the various animated television series so much fun to watch.
